2023年2月7日より、中東地域最大の国際展「シャルジャ・ビエンナーレ15」が「Thinking Historically in the Present(現在という時間の中で歴史的に考えること)」のテーマの下、シャルジャ首長国内5都市19箇所を会場に開催する。

30周年を迎えるシャルジャ・ビエンナーレのキュレーションは当初、現代美術の在り方に変化をもたらし、世界各地の美術機関や国際展の発展に影響を与える野心的かつ知性に溢れた数々のプロジェクトを手がけたオクウィ・エンヴェゾーに託されていた。ところが、2019年3月にエンヴェゾーが闘病の末に他界。その意向に従い、シャルジャ・アートファウンデーションのディレクター、ホーア・アル・カシミが中心となり、エンヴェゾーと長きにわたって協働関係にあった複数の専門家とともにワーキンググループを組織し、引き継ぐことになった。エンヴェゾーが提唱していた「ポストコロニアル・コンステレーション」や複数のキーコンセプトを起点に、ポストコロニアルの主体性、記憶の貯蔵庫としての身体、クレオール化とハイブリッド化のプロセス、博物館化されたオブジェの返還、人種差別的な眼差し、世代間の継承、グローバル・モダニズム、先住民族性、脱植民地化をめぐる繊細な対話を目指す。

シャルジャ・ビエンナーレ15には、160名のアーティストとコレクティブが参加、それぞれ国民性、伝統、人種、ジェンダー、身体、想像力に対する画一的な理解を批評的に捉えた実践を意識的に展開する。エンヴェゾーは生前、30周年を迎える同ビエンナーレが批評的なプラットフォームとして活発に機能していくために、30名のアーティストに新作の制作を依頼。ジョン・アコムフラー、カデール・アティア、サミー・バロジ、マリア・マグダレナ・カンポス=ポンズ、キャロリーナ・カイセド、デスティニー・ディーコン、マンティア・ディアワラ、ココ・フスコ、ハッサン・ハジャジ、モナ・ハトゥム、ルバイナ・ヒミッド、アイザック・ジュリアン、アマル・カンワル、ブシュラ・ハリーリ、イブラヒム・マハマ、ケリー・ジェームス・マーシャル、スティーヴ・マックイーン、アルマグル・メンリバエワ、アリーニ・モッタ、ワンゲチ・ムトゥ、フィリップ・パレーノ、ドリス・サルセド、ベルニ・サーレ、インカ・ショニバレ、ヴィヴァン・スンダラム、ファティマ・トゥガー、ハジラ・ワヒード、バーバラ・ウォーカー、ナリ・ウォード、キャリー・メイ・ウィームズといった錚々たるアーティストが新作を発表する。

会期中には、シャルジャ・アートファウンデーションがビエンナーレとともに主催するマーチ・ミーティング2023を開催。「Postcolonial Constellation: Art, Culture, Politics after 1960(ポストコロニアル・コンステレーション:1960年以降の芸術、文化、政治)」をテーマに、領域横断的な議論を展開する。
