Gift of Sea: Raising a Flag on the Summit of the Battlefield  2010

A survey of the complete works from Morimura’s most recent A Requiem (2006-2010) series of self-portraits reenacting iconic photographs of men and political events that were significant in shaping the 20th century. A total of 43 works, including 15 on exhibit for the first time, presented in four chapters. In assuming the roles of politicians, artists, the assassinated, and the man in the street, the artist’s own recollections also begin to show through, and as is particularly apparent in the final work (on video) in the exhibition, Gift of Sea: Raising a flag on the battlefield (2010), they are portraits/self-portraits laced with criticism and humor.

The exhibition will travel in June to the Toyoda Municipal Museum of Art, and thereafter to Hiroshima City Museum of Art, and Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art.
