Summer vacation has just begun at the University of Bologna in Italy, considered to be Europe’s oldest, when a shocking incident occurs. In the university library, a large number of antique books are found on the floor with thick nails pounded through them. The suspect that emerges is an up-and-coming young philosophy professor who has suddenly disappeared. He has widely been seen as a rising star, but he throws away everything including his car and his wallet and begins a new life in an abandoned house on the banks of the Po River. Having despaired of the modern age, he slowly returns to life and searches for truth through interactions with the rustic people of the nearby village. This masterpiece, which the renowned director Ermanno Olmi intended to be his last feature-length dramatic film, powerfully depicts the process of life coming to fruition through spellbinding imagery bathed in light and rich in Christian allegories.
