Made up of poetic narration and a montage of still photographs, this documentary was created by a cinéaste with a unique aesthetic vision. Using Africa as a symbol of the south and Japan as a symbol of the east, the French director approaches these two contrasting regions with an objective view.

A letter from a cameraman who traveled all over the world―the narrative begins with a woman’s recitation of the letter, and continues with the dreamlike figures of Icelandic girls, and a collage of fertile images from Japan and Africa. Created by Chris Marker, an artist who maintained a love of travel throughout his life, the work is a paean to time and place, existence and history, and oblivion and prayer.
