Giuseppe Penone

7.7 − 9.23
Toyota Municipal Museum of Art

The Italian comtemporary sculptor and conceptual artist Giuseppe Penone whose career began in the 1960s is one of the representative artists of the arte povera movement. He has explored the nature of the relationship between the human form and the external world with a focus on the parts of the body that come into contact with the external world such as the skin and the nails. His work that is constructed from natural materials such as wood, stone and glass is conceptual yet bursting with poetic sentiment, and contains a power that is intuitively captivating.
For the first in the 12 years since the first exhibition of his work was held in Japan in 1997, another large-scale solo exhibition in the same museum as previously has now become a reality, providing another opportunity to become acquainted with the artist made famous by his work for the Centre Pompidou in 2004 and the Venice Biennale in 2007 and including his recent and also his newest work. A talk with the artist is scheduled for the final day of the exhibition (September 23).
