In 2006, Zhuang Hui – who was born in the once booming oil town of Yumen – and Dan’er began their survey of Yumen, and as they explored, their focus shifted from changes in the area’s history and society to the history of oil drilling. For one year, the artists set up a photo studio in Yumen, and by taking pictures of ordinary individuals living in the area, they attempted to shed light on the grave social problems brought on by the depletion of the oil supply. This exhibition surveys the artists’ Yumen activities from research documentation to their photo studio project.
