hiromiyoshii (Tokyo)
The New York-based artist’s second solo show with hiromiyoshii. This group of two-dimensional works featuring the artist’s own name writ large seems to pass comment on the history of self-portraiture (even graffiti-style expression?), or perhaps question the status of the individual in contemporary society. Smith’s offerings to date also include a series of abstract paintings in seemingly stark contrast to such methodologies. Could a reality of sorts in which the two can coexist be the key to pinpointing the special quality of this artist? Smith also plans to debut a number of new paintings.
