Miyamoto Ryuji: The grass, bugs and sea

Kobe 2008 bugs  2008

Miyamoto Ryuji’s first solo show in Japan since 2006 comprises one pinhole photograph and 20 photograms. The latter, created by placing objects directly onto the surface photosensitive paper and then exposing it to light, feature summer bugs and weeds from the site of the former Aum Shinrikyo Sarin factory. He presents the pinhole photograph as a flattened rendition of the inside of the box that he covered with photosensitive material and exposed through a pinhole to light. Both approaches differ from pointing a lens at a subject and triggering the shutter, yet carry on the theme of destruction and regeneration present in Miyamoto’s previous series documenting crumbling and decaying architectue.
