Drawing from dance and visual arts, Aki Sasamoto is known for making multimedia sculptural environments in which she stages live performances. Often incorporating modified found objects such as café tables, closets and nets, as well as audio-visual equipment, the sculptural environments stand alone as formal investigations into the everyday arrangement of space, but take on new significance when activated by the performances. The performances in turn address topics ranging from mathematical concepts to mosquitoes and hemorrhoids, unfolding through speech and body movement as allegorical narratives of social relations.

According to Sasamoto, E_O (2011) represents ego without gravity. Using childhood nightmares and boxing routines as starting points, this performance/installation explores the gaps between belief and perception, and attempts to establish the inherent geometry of eyesight, the enneagram, muscles and death. The sculptural elements of E_O are inspired in part by vernacular worship culture and ritual, with altar-like structures made of found pipe stands, towel ‘gates’ housing lenses and lemons, pre-recorded sound, plastic bags and paper among the work’s key elements.
