One Sunday afternoon in summer, Ned Merril (Burt Lancaster) appears in an upper class neighborhood wearing nothing but his swimming trunks. He drops in on his friend Dan and his wife and invites his old swimming buddy for a swim, but Dan declines, exhausted from partying the night before. Ned hits upon the brilliant idea of to pool hopping his way home, beginning with Dan’s swimming pool.
The next pool he visits belongs to Betty Graham with whom he was once in love. Betty is very proud of her new pool and smugly satisfied with her petty bourgeoisie lifestyle. Growing increasingly disenchanted, Ned heads towards the Hammers’ house. The attitude displayed by the people Ned meets becomes increasingly strange…
