What part do the Alps, which cut through the center of Europe, play in people’s lives? And what is it about the mountains that attracts themus?

The Italian photographer Armin Linke sees the Alps as an outdoor laboratory to observe various aspects of traditional and modern culture. Linke captures the daily lives of people in 40 places, from France to Slovenia, in eight countries abutting the mountains where four languages are spoken. What effect do complicated social, economic, and political conditions have on this alpine environment? This film, which Linke began shooting in 2004 and took seven years to complete, is both a scientific and artistic paean to the Alps.
