Special autumn program – Food, clothing and shelter

Le Studio’s theme for 2017 is “The Sense of Object.” In October and November, we present a special two-month autumn program focusing on food, clothing and shelter.

In any era of history, objects relating to food, clothing, and shelter, and our thoughts and memories of them, are central to human experience. Scenes where familiar and intimate aspects of everyday life are shown in rich and revelatory light can be among the greatest thrills of cinema. For this film series, we have selected masterworks that vividly portray people in the midst of changing times.

All About Our House depicts drama stirred by differences in age and taste, which come to light when people build a home. In Les Adieux à la reine, the audience is transported to the eve of the French Revolution by recreated costumes and lifestyles of the French court. And in Eat Drink Man Woman, the dinner table conveys not only the flavor of everyday life but also the changing way men and women relate in contemporary society.
We are sure you will enjoy each of these films in which food, clothing and shelter are central themes.

A chef at Taiwan’s most luxurious hotel has raised three daughters as a single father. On Sunday evenings the four of them always gather around the table for Dad’s home-cooked dinners, but the daughters pick at their food and the mood is glum. The eldest is a high school teacher and coward in matters of the heart, the beautiful and brilliant second daughter works for an airline, and the youngest is a still-innocent university student. All three have their minds elsewhere, as love comes into their lives, and one by one they take flight from the family nest.

Eating can bring people the utmost joy and pleasure. In this film, which put director Ang Lee on the map, stunning culinary creations convey the power of dining as a ritual, and act as counterpoint to the three lovely daughters’ romantic awakenings.
