One August morning, a stranger named Bruno (Vittorio Gassman) asks Roberto (Jean-Louis Trintignant), an earnest law student, to make a phone call for him. To repay the favor, Bruno offers to buy the student a drink, but this marks the start of an adventure-filled drive, including visits to Roberto’s uncle and Bruno’s estranged wife and child.
Though Roberto wearies of Bruno’s loud voice, overly confident manner, and mania for fast driving, he is also attracted by the man’s diametrically opposite character. But neither of the men can imagine the unforeseen event that lies up ahead. Set in Rome, this masterful comedy was directed by the great Italian filmmaker Dino Risi
