Shinbaï –le vol de l’âme–

Shinbaï –le vol de l’âme–, co-produced by Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, will hold its Japan performance at Aoyama Spiral Hall from September 23 – 26, 2010.

The performance will be a creative collaboration by dancer Emmanuelle Huynh and ikebana master Seiho Okudaira. Born in 1963, Emmanuelle Huynh studied philosophy and dance, notably under Maurice Béjart, and is now based in France actively collaborating with various artists across genres as a dancer and choreographer.

Huynh first got the idea for this dance performance in 2001 during her stay in Villa Kujoyama Kyoto, where she met Seiho Okudaira, ikebana master of the Sekiso School who is known for her unique flower arrangements.
The type of flower arrangement called “Tatehana Rikka” that Okudaira practices, where the elements of nature are incorporated into a single vase, is said to be a highly spiritual art that is sublimated into a prayer to the gods. This mysterious and poetic collaboration of contemporary dance and ikebana is expressed on stage that is arranged like a large bouquet of flowers. The title Shinbaï derives from a Kyogen repertoire, which depicts a master who tries to steal a branch that embodies the essence of the “soul” of ikebana.
