Ai Weiwei detained in China

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was detained by police on 12 August in the Sichuan city of Chengdu. He was in Chengdu to give evidence in defense of writer and environmentalist Tan Zuoren, who was on trial there for subversion. Ai returned to Beijing following his release, however upon learning that one of the volunteers who had accompanied him to Chengdu was still under investigation in police custody, he flew back to Chengdu this morning.

Ai had been working with Tan to compile a list of the children who died in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. One of the works in the artist’s major solo show Ai Weiwei: According to what?, currently underway at the Mori Art Museum, is a requiem for the souls of the children who lost their lives in the disaster.
