Thai artist/filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul (born 1970 in Bangkok) became the surprise winner of the Palme d’Or at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival. The winning work, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives, is a surreal tale about a dying man whose dead relatives visit him as ghosts, beckoning him back to his birthplace. Far from unknown at Cannes, Weerasethakul was awarded the Certain Regard prize in 2002 for Blistfully Yours and the Jury Prize in 2004 for Tropical Malady. Tokyoites were treated to Weerasethakul’s short film works at his recent solo show at SCAI the BATHHOUSE and his film installation, Emerald, is currently showing in the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo’s Collection exhibition.
