Tsuzuki Kyoichi opens show in Hiroshima

Exhibition

“I’m a journalist, not an artist.” Thus declares Tsuzuki Kyoichi at the entrance to his solo show opening to the public tomorrow at Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art. After writing and editing for magazines on a range of subjects related to art and culture, Tsuzuki gained renown for his photographs and commentary (and guerrilla-style journalism) through series such as Tokyo Style offering an intimate glimpse of the cluttered and cozy living spaces of the Japanese capital, Roadside Japan, a travelogue of off-beat, off-the-beaten-track spots across the archipelago (earning him the 23rd Kimura Ihei Award), and No Holds Barred, spotlighting art otherwise ignored by the art world, published in ART iT. As an art practitioner he recreated a sex museum at the 2001 Yokohama Triennale and showed laser karaoke videos at the 2nd Yebisu International Festival for Arts & Alternative Visions. This exhibition focuses on the Japanese components of Kyoichi Tsuzuki’s expansive oeuvre, featuring a collection of new work produced specifically for the show combined with examples from major earlier series. Tsuzuki will be onsite for an artist’s talk on opening day.
