production of Handel’s Semele

Chinese contemporary artist Zhang Huan will design and direct a new production of George Frideric Handel’s Baroque opera Semele at the National Opera of Belgium (La Monnaie) in Brussels. The artist renowned for his performance art in the 1990s will use an original Ming dynasty ancestral temple to set the stage of the 300-year-old European opera house. Coinciding with the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death, the production will run from 8 – 29 September. Zhang’s Three Legged Buddha, a sculpture inspired by the opera, will be on display in the public square in front of the opera house from the end of August through September.
