Laurie Simmons film screening in Shibuya

The Music of Regret (2006), a film by New York artist Laurie Simmons that grew out of her photographic works, will be screening this weekend at Rise X in Shibuya. Structured as a three-act mini musical, in Act 1 vintage puppets sing about the pain and regret stemming from a family feud; in Act 2 Meryl Streep plays the role of a female ventriloquist dummy singing of her relationships with her five dummy suitors; and in the final act ‘walking objects’ – including a gun, a house, and a pocket watch – dance till they drop in a cut-throat audition.

The artist, who is currently visiting Japan, will be giving a talk (details to be announced) following the series of screenings.
