Ohmaki Shinji’s project-based solo exhibition, the culmination of an exploration that began in 2007 with a workshop titled ‘Is it waste?’ and led to visits to and surveys of waste disposal landfills. The result is a bold yet delicate installation created using slag, a byproduct of waste incineration, in which the artist’s approach to dealing with a graphic problem is in top form. Here too we find Ohmaki’s signature involvement of the viewer in creating the work, albeit surreptitiously: the slag used to create the work was generated from Tokyo trash.
