‘Micropop’ is a term coined by the art critic (and curator of this exhibition) Matsui Midori to describe a trend she observed in the late 1990s and early 2000s in the art practices of emerging Japanese artists: the reassembling of fragments of information to suggest new ways of perceiving the world or give new meaning to the outmoded and mundane. Winter Garden explores the practice as it relates to the world today through nearly 60 paintings, drawings and video works including 47 from the Japan Foundation collection. The show will tour internationally hereafter.
