Sreshtha Rit Premnath Surrender 2009
Digital c-print 101×228 cm, edition of five

Decisive moments in monumental events – isolated from the sequence of their before and after – solidify in our memories; moments often inextricably linked to the political, religious, ideological, philosophical, psychological or cognitive issues surrounding them. Bangalore-born Rit Premnath’s Surrender, a photograph of a U.S. Navy helicopter descending on Somali pirates recomposed as a triptych, for example, can be likened to the moment a single event is committed to history, viewpoints of which, colored by the times and social milieu, change as it is relayed. Co-curated by Thomas Erben Gallery (New York) and Seven Art (New Delhi), Moment as Monument features works in a variety of media by thirteen artists from Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Iran, Pakistan and the United States, many of whom are part of the South Asian diasporas.
