Kimura Yuki: Year 1940 was a leap year starting on Monday

10.10 – 11.7
Taka Ishii Gallery (Kiyosumi)

Ursel (24,Ⅻ,40)   2009

The latest solo show by the artist whose summer collection exhibition at Daiwa Press Viewing Room (Hiroshima) was the topic of much discussion. Here she presents 10 photographic/sculptural works inspired by old photos collected during her travels abroad. The exhibition starts with a photograph taken in Germany in 1940 for a Christmas card. The title of the show, incidentally, was the first line to appear when the artist searched ‘1940’ in Wikipedia. Images call forth, connect, and develop other images. Placed behind sheets of dark-toned Plexiglas, they also charge the viewer with making those connections.
