Dan Cameron resigns from Prospect New Orleans

Dan Cameron has announced he is resigning as director of Prospect New Orleans, the international biennial he launched in 2008. Cameron’s announcement coincided with the Oct 22 opening ceremony of Prospect’s second edition, which had been delayed a year due to financial difficulties. With 81 local and international artists, the first edition of Prospect had cost a reported USD 5 million to produce, resulting in almost USD 1 million in debts for the organizing foundation, US Biennial, Inc. After an interim project focusing on local and regional artists that was held in 2010, Prospect 1.5, this year’s Prospect.2 was produced on a budget of USD 2.4 million, and features a significantly reduced number of participants.

In an interview with the local Times-Picayune, Cameron said that he feels the decision is best for Prospect, and hopes that distancing himself from the identity of the biennial will help to attract the continued financial support of local backers. Cameron will remain on the Prospect board of directors, who will now search for an executive director. Franklin Sirmans, of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, has been announced as curator of Prospect.3, scheduled to be held in 2013.
