Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010)

Artist Louise Bourgeois died of a heart attack May 31 in New York at the age of 98, it has been reported. Born in Paris in 1911, Bourgeois was known for making sculptural works in bronze, marble and unconventional materials including latex and plastic. In her later years Bourgeois became the focus of major institutional attention and she was given solo exhibitions at venues including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate Modern in London. Additionally, she was featured in large-scale international art surveys such as documenta and the Venice Biennale. In Japan Bourgeois had a solo exhibition at the Yokohama Museum of Art in 1997 and her monumental spider-shaped sculpture Maman (2002) is on permanent display outside the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills complex.
