As reported earlier by ART iT, Japan Edition, the fourth Yokohama Triennale opened on Aug 6. The main venues are the Yokohama Museum of Art and BankART Studio NYK (also known as the NYK Waterfront Warehouse). The director general is Eriko Osaka (director, Yokohama Museum of Art) and the artistic director is Akiko Miki (curator, Palais de Tokyo, Paris).

“YOKOHAMA TRIENNALE 2011: OUR MAGIC HOUR —How Much of the World Can We Know?” will feature not only contemporary art but also works such as Surrealist paintings by Max Ernst and René Magritte and ukiyo-e prints by the Utagawa school, all part of the collection of the Yokohama Museum of Art.

Despite concerns that the triennale may be cancelled due to the earthquake, the triennale will be held according to the original schedule from Aug 6 to Nov 6. Damien Hirst confirmed his participation after March 11, and artists from various countries have reportedly shown their support.

Over the course of the triennale, many satellite programs will be held alongside main events such as the 24-hour screening of Christian Marclay’s The Clock (2010). These satellite programs include “Krzysztof Wodiczko: Art and War” (international symposium and public projection), in which Wodiczko’s latest work Survival Projection 2011 will be seen for the first time, as well as the ningyo joruri or bunraku puppet play “Sugimoto bunraku: Dekunobo irinasake Sonezaki shinju tsuketari Kannon meguri” (“Kannon Pilgrimmage” from The Love Suicide at Sonezaki, artistic director: Hiroshi Sugimoto) and the second installation of Miwa Yanagi’s theater project 1924, “Kaisen” (“Naval Battle”) at the Kanagawa Arts Theatre Hall.
