Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art – Bloomberg pavilion project

Bloomberg pavilion project

“BLOOMBERG PAVILION PROJECT” is a project holding a private exhibition and open call for participants exhibition of a young artist resident in Tokyo, a performance event for one year on the stage of a pavilion built in Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art site. Young architect Akihisa Hirata that the design of the pavilion attracts attention at home and abroad. Right next to the main entrance of the art museum, I am born as a new symbol of the MOT. On the stage of space opening up the future of this building, I provide the place of the challenge to the young artist and aim at the activation of the art scene of Tokyo.
This project performs social service continuously in Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art and all parts of the world that raised a young artist carrying the future through collection of exhibition “MOT アニュアル” and works activity, and there are many cultural activities including the art, and it is with the second of the collaboration for the purpose of the improvement of the accessibility to young person writer support and the art that finance information provider, Bloomberg supporting carried out from 2007. I have anyone enjoy all programs to unfold in a pavilion free.
New art space of the MOT to send new talent to in October, 2011 is born.

[building concept]
I wanted to make the pavilion such as one tree.
The tree has a symbolic shape. At the same time I create comfortable space for a human being such as the shade of a tree. For example, a wall grows up steadily towards the top, and how does it turn out if I make the consecutive aspects such as a bulky “fold?” “The fold” just opens like a tree and receives light and will create the bright impressive appearance. In addition, it will be just possible for a place with the quality appropriate for the slightly calm display space by this aspect like the shade of a tree in the bottom.

The pleated aspect is made with a very simple method. I only put the same isosceles triangle called the high plane together, and there are the pleated consecutive aspects that bent in the ratio of uniformity. Here, simple repetition produces organic unities. Just have the unities called the tree by repetition of simple branching that is advantageous to photosynthesis. What is it to be natural for a building or to be simple? This small pavilion throws such a big question in our future.
