Hara Museum ARC is proud to present two exhibitions for the summer season:
The World of Color: Selections from the Hara Museum Collection
July 2 (Sat.) – September 11 (Sun.), 2011
Hara Museum ARC Galleries A, B and C
The world in which we live is bursting with natural and man-made colors. In our daily lives, colors assume representative and symbolic meanings. They include such globally understood colors such as the colors of traffic signals, and those with unique meanings that depend on cultural context, such as the colors red and white in Japan. How do colors appear in the works of contemporary artists? The answer is “in many ways”; for example, as a rainbow of dazzling colors, as relatively monochrome tones, or in the natural state of the raw materials used. In some artworks, colors are applied in delicate, detailed brushstrokes; in others, they are applied as flat, inorganic planes, not by brush, but by spray can or paint roller. We invite you to experience the fascinating role that colors play in contemporary art expression through specially selected works from the Hara Museum Collection.

Excitation of the Spirit
Part I: July 2 (Sat.) – August 3 (Wed.), 2011 Part II: August 5 (Fri.) – September 11 (Sun.), 2011
Hara Museum ARC Kankai Pavilion
The words “compete,” “fight” and “struggle” describe the spirit behind this exhibition. Here, the power of the confrontation is captured in early-modern era paintings from the Hara Rokuro Collection. These scenes of traditional customs and historical legends and anecdotes present the viewer with the spirit of the fight that is almost palpable. The theme of competition extends to a set of accessories used in a traditional Japanese game of fragrance guessing, which was also designed to please the eye. The will to compete, fight or struggle may also be driven by the goal of mutual growth and improvement. In that sense, we hope these colorful artworks may energize the spirit of those who view them. Works of traditional art are juxtaposed with contemporary pieces from the Hara Museum Collection to allow viewers to experience a world in which beauty and form are woven together in a way that transcends time and place.
