Starting from tomorrow! VIVA Festival

From Hara Museum, Tokyo

On November 13 (Sat.) and 14 (Sun.), the Hara Museum will hold VIVA Festival, a two-day video art festival featuring short films by 34 artists from 16 countries. Here are three works which will be featured tomorrow, November 13.

Martha Colburn, Triumph of the Wild (2008)
Born in Pennsylvania. Lives and works between The Netherlands and New York City.

Most well-known for her animation films, which are created through puppetry, collage, and paint on glass techniques, Colburn’s style of collage fuses pop culture and political imagery with an aesthetic that is simultaneously fantastical, painterly, and punk rock. The work Triumph of the Wild is a chronological film of American history, beginning with the American Revolution, two World Wars and other history of struggles.

Ana de Alvear, Chinchia’s Voyage (2004)

Chinchia is an Octopus Female who, tired of being always at the same “Place,” decides to make a voyage to discover what she supposes is the unknown. When she reaches her final destination, she finds out that…

Rui Calçada Bastos, Same old tune (2005)
Born in 1971 in Lisbon, Portugal. Lives and works in Berlin and Lisbon.

The artist is walking on a large, rotating disc, as if in sync with a lyric “another spring, another love and yet it’s always the same” from a Marlene Dietrich song. His position does not change, but by trying to maintain his stasis, he gradually becomes fatigued by the effort. He continues to walk, but the view does not change…

Also shown during the Festival are works by Francis Alÿs, Hans Op de Beeck, Isaac Julien, and Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba. The Spanish curator of the project Macu Morán will speak briefly to the audience at the beginning of each screening. Vital International Video Art Festival

Dates: November 13 [Sat.] and 14 [Sun.], 2010 from 14:00
Viewing fee (per day): Regular 2,000 yen; Students 1,500 yen; Hara Museum members and up to 2 guests 1,000 yen (per person). Fee includes admission to the current exhibition, Jae-Eun Choi—Forests of Asoka.
