Kankai Pavilion fall exhibition: Seasonal Delights

Part I: September 12 (Sat.) – October 12 (Mon./National Holiday)
Part II:October 17 (Sat.) – November 23 (Mon./National Holiday)

This will be the last show to be held in the Kankai Pavilion this year.

Field with the moon, the subject called “Musashino” in Japanese (detail),
eight-fold screen, Edo period

On show are works of Japanese painting that pay homage to the transition from autumn to winter, as well as works with auspicious motifs such as the tiger–the zodiac sign for the year 2010– as an early reminder of the coming New Year.

Kano Yasunobu, Dragon and tiger (detail), pair of hanging scrolls, Edo period

Doesn’t it look like a character from Manga?? Look at the spontaneity in the brush strokes and the soft touch of ink. On the bamboo are flecks of white pigment which represent snow.

Pair of Satsuma ware sake bottles with their portable case, maki-e on lacquer, Edo period

The shape of the bottles is taken from “Buri Buri,” a popular children’s toy prior to the Edo period.
Buri Buri is a spindle shaped wooden toy with wheels. On the sides of the case are auspicious motifs such as pine, bamboo and plum trees, as well as crane and turtle, befitting auspicious occasions.

Together with these examples of traditional art will be shown works of contemporary art, allowing viewers to enjoy the dialogue that transcends time and space.

Paintings on display at the Pavilion will be changed during the exhibition (two paintings introduced above are on display during the first phase of the show).
We hope you will enjoy the change in seasons through these works.
