The New within the Old: Contemporary Art from the Hara Museum Collection

The New within the Old is a unique exhibition held each year from the middle of spring at the Kankai Pavilion. During this time, selected works of contemporary art (the “New”) are juxtaposed with the tranquil space of the Pavilion’s traditional Shoin-style architecture (the “Old”).
This year, the featured artworks include a four-fold standing screen created by Kengo Kito, a first-time creation by the artist, as well as works from the Hara Collection that were carefully selected by Kito on the theme of “color.” Kito is the pathbreaking artist whose innovative work is being showcased (in Gallery A) for the duration of the year starting from this spring. Currently on display is a large-scale installation made up of colorful hula hoops that has enjoyed wide acclaim.
The Kankai Pavilion reverses the conditions under which Kito’s newly created standing screen and other artworks are normally viewed, substituting bright illumination with lighting that mimics the quality and intensity of traditional Japanese wax candles, allowing viewers to experience anew the relationship between light and color.

Special Notice
Please note that on June 3 (Saturday), 2017, ”1,000 Persons Rock Festival” will be held at the Green Bokujo recreational ranch adjacent to the museum. For this reason, congestion in the traffic condition near the museum is expected and some noise from the festival may be audible at the museum. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

*For residents of Gunma Prefecture: Free admission for elementary and junior high school children every Saturday during the school term/200-yen-discount on admission for up to five persons upon presentation of the Guchoki Passport.
*Visitors to the Kankai Pavilion can view the on-going exhibition in the contemporary art galleries as well.
Directions: By train: Take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Takasaki, change to the Joestu Line, and disembark at Shibukawa. From Shibukawa, ARC is 10 minutes away by taxi or 15 minutes by bus (take the Ikaho Onsen bus to ″Green Bokujo Mae″). By car: 8 kilometers (about 15 minutes) from the Kan-etsu Expressway Shibukawa Ikaho Interchange (in the direction of Ikaho Onsen).
