Current exhibition at the Kankai Pavilion

From Hara Museum ARC (Gunma)

The Someiyoshino cherry trees around Hara Museum ARC are in full bloom! Also to bloom are double-petal cherry trees. Why not visit us and enjoy art and nature? The current exhibition at the Kankai Pavilion features works from the Hara Rokuro Collection of East Asian art in two phases. The second phase just started on April 24. Below are some of the featured works.

Kano Eitoku, Tiger in a bamboo glove (originally used for wallpaper and sliding door at Nikko-in, Mi’idera temple), Momoyama period, 16th century

On view from the second phase of the exhibition are Tiger in a bamboo glove by Kano Eitoku, Scene based on an anecdote by Tao Yuanming (poet of the Jin dynasty) by Kano School, A pair of cranes and A pair of cranes and an old pine tree by Shen Nanping.

Celadon vase with long neck on globular body (National Treasure), Southern Song dynasty, 12th – 13th century

This work is known among Japanese tea aficionados as the “Turnip,” a name which expresses the rich fullness of its round body. Of the three Chinese celadon vases that have been designated by the Japanese Government as National Treasures, Celadon vase with long neck on globular body is considered a masterpiece. With a beautiful pale blue glaze matched by a smooth surface and soft roundness, the vase is an exquisite example of harmonious beauty. It is surprisingly lighter than it looks.

Maruyama Okyo, Landscape of Yodo River, Edo period, 1765

Landscape of Yodo River by Maruyama Okyo
In the first phase of the exhibition, scenes from Fushimi to Yodo castle in Kyoto were on view. The second phase of the show features the succeeding scenes. Come and enjoy the fantastic views of this 16 meter long scroll.
