Here are some installation views.

“Forests of Asoka” (2010)
Installation
Sound engineer: Masahiro Yamada
Photograph by: Shigeo Muto (following photos also by Shigeo Muto)

An installation using building materials which were part of a 200 year old storage owned by Amish people in North America. It is a work which invites you to feel the time spent by the Amish who live closely with nature, share the time embodied within the trees, and go on an enriching journey through space and time.

“Forever and a Day” (2010)
Video installation
Video shooting: Kozo Natsuumi Editing: Shintaro Hori Music: Midori Takada
Sound engineer: Masahiro Yamada

Unlike Gallery 1 which physically employs wood, this gallery features a close-up shots of a large tree. The shots, which at a glance seem still, are actually moving images. The slow panning seems to reflect the vast time that exists within this large tree.

“Another Moon” (2010)
Video with antique stone laver
Video shooting: Kozo Natsuumi Editing: Shintaro Hori

The work is literally small in size, but very impressive. On the stone laver filled with water is projected an image of a large tree. The image continues to change slowly, different colors appearing and disappearing, as if to imply the rich diversity of nature.

Works over the staircase and in Galleries 4 and 5 feature photos of wood taken by the artist around Lake Towada and Hakkoda in Aomori Prefecture. The soft outline of the wood makes the works appear more like paintings.

There are more works that are on display in this exhibition, so come see the show! You have to experience Choi’s forests yourself! The catalogue for the exhibition due to come out around the latter part of this month, which includes essays by Director Keiko Nakamura (Director General,
