William Eggleston: Paris – Kyoto

From the Hara Museum, Tokyo

The first solo exhibition at a Japanese museum of works by William Eggleston, one of the fathers of color photography, opened on Saturday, June 5 at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo. The artist came to Japan for the opening and stayed for about a week.

Below is a snapshot from one of the interviews held at the museum.

He is holding Leica M3 made in the 1950s, specially painted in olive green by an
acquaintance in Tokyo. Five years ago, he placed this order, and he got reacquainted
with his camera on this occasion of his visit to Japan. “This is the one and the only
camera in the world,” said the artist, thoroughly satisfied with the result. He borrowed
the lens from photographer and Leica owner Takashi Homma, who came to meet
him for the interview.

Below is a shot from the press conference held on Friday, June 4.

“Hara Museum is my favorite place in Japan,” said the artist William Eggleston, who was delighted to be present at his opening reception for his show at the Hara.

After several speeches by the others, it was Eggleston’s turn to greet the guests, which he did in his own specially concise way, consisting of a single sentence: “All I have to say is hanging on the wall.”

On Sunday, June 6, we held Curators Talk. There was a surprise visit by the artist!
