A survey of the year’s most memorable exhibitions in the greater Tokyo area, including a heavy dose of the postwar avant-garde group Hi-Red Center, galleries making history, the Yokohama Triennale 2014, and the reopening of a 1930s-era Art Deco icon. Hiraki Sawa’s “Under the Box, Beyond the Bounds” (pictured), at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, is one of the year’s most spectacular exhibitions.

Spotlighting the inaugural edition of Parasophia: Kyoto International Festival of Contemporary Culture 2015, as well as other international exhibitions including the next iterations of the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions and the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. Also upcoming: architect Kenzo Tange’s photographs, Mono-ha artist Kishio Suga and Gabriel Orozco at MOT, and the NMAO’s take on Jiro Takamatsu.

Forecast 2015: Florian Pumhösl at Parasophia

The Austrian artist Florian Pumhösl was recently in Tokyo for a two-person exhibition with Silke Otto-Knapp at Taka Ishii Gallery, “Ratio of Distance” (Nov 22-Dec 20), and will soon return to Japan for the inaugural Parasophia: Kyoto International Festival of Contemporary Culture 2015. ART iT spoke with Pumhösl about the complex history of modernism, both past and present, and his interest in the Japanese avant-garde of the 1920s and ’30s.

Forecast 2015: Annette Messager in Echigo-Tsumari

The subject of not one but two retrospectives in 2014 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, respectively, Annette Messager passed through Tokyo in October of this year for a site visit for the upcoming Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2015. This will be Messager’s first project for the festival, where she will be working with a centuries-old thatch-roofed farmhouse. ART iT spoke with Messager about her broader practice and her impressions of Echigo-Tsumari.
