slide show – Jasper Morrison

[Title] slide show
[Artist] Jasper Morrison
[Date] May 18 – July 18, 2006

This window is titled “l’Air de Paris Slide Show.” The scene presents a room in an apartment in Paris. The window frames and coat hangers are ordinary ones that could be found anywhere. On the floor is printed a flooring pattern that has been drawn by the designer himself. The window truly gives the impression that a typical room in Paris has been brought to Ginza. Inside that space, there are people watching slides. One person uses a carousel projector and appears to be explaining something. It seems that they are having a discussion about the “air” (mood) of Paris. “What makes Paris, and where do these expressions come from?”… The seventy-seven slides that they watch are all photographs of the streets in Paris.
Each frame in the slide is a scene taken from a viewpoint characteristic of Morrison, who is an industrial designer. They are not brilliant images of buildings visited by tourists, but ordinary things that Parisians would surely notice, such as a construction site on a street corner, an office window, or a loaded truck parked on the roadside. Moreover, the background of each small window is a photograph of shop windows in various street corners of Paris. Here again, ordinary Paris is expressed. The products displayed in front appear as if they have emerged from the shop window in the background, allowing one to enjoy this sense of continuity.
This window conveys the air of Paris in a straightforward fashion by going beyond the stage of the window and showing photographs of actual Paris. As they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words.”
