cruise – Tetsuya Nakamura

[Title] cruise
[Artist] Tasuya Nakamura
[Date] April 3 – May 27, 2003

The second half of Tetsuya Nakamura’s window display, which was structured in two parts beginning with the last exhibition, expresses the cruiser sailing upon the waves of the vast Mediterranean Sea, after leaving the pier where it had been anchored.
The cruiser, which gracefully advances in the calm Mediterranean, stands out as it reveals its full, streamlined shape. Surrounded by waves, it gives the impression of being a real ship. The artist thought of this graceful image as appropriate for “leisure for adults.”
Under the intensifying sun appropriate for early summer, the artist uses in the window’s background a motif of waves from the scarf, “Mediterranean” With the two contrasting colors of vermillion and dark blue, Nakamura conveys the image of a cruiser slowly strolling in the sea between daybreak and sunset.
On the deck of the cruiser, coated in glossy white, towels and tableware products for picnics are displayed. There are also hats and gloves to avoid the rays of the sun. It is a holiday for adults, who anchor the cruiser in the vast sea and enjoy their days unhurriedly among the whisper of the winds.
Easy to appreciate at first glance, Tetsuya Nakamura’s two window displays, both of which use a white cruiser, express Hermès’ 2003 annual theme, “The Mediterranean,” in a playful way. The unexpected juxtaposition of the high-speed cruiser arrested inside a display window also exhibits a successful visual effect.
