The largest exhibition in the Biennale’s 37-year history brings together 440 works by 166 artists (70 of whom created new works) from 36 countries addressing the theme ‘The Beauty of Distance’.
Sugimoto Hiroshi, who discussed his aesthetic interests and their relation to the origins of art at the Biennale’s keynote address, presents a site-specific installation drawing on mythology and the history of photograph. Set in an abandoned powerhouse, Faraday Cage is composed of lightbox images from his Lightning Fields Illuminated series leading to a 13th-century sculpture of Raijin, the god of thunder, juxtaposed against a single Lightning Fields photograph.
The works are concentrated mainly on Cockatoo Island and at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney with others scattered throughout five other readily accessible sites. For information on other Japanese presentation please see ART iT News: Biennale of Sydney features announced.
