Biennial

Features of the 17th Biennale of Sydney were announced last week by artistic director David Elliott. Based on the curatorial theme ‘The Beauty of Distance: Songs of Survival in a Precarious Age’, the former founding director of the Mori Art Museum (Tokyo) will juxtapose the visual arts with other art forms in exhibits sited on Cockatoo Island in Sydney harbor, and other venues around the city. More than 160 names currently appear on the exhibiting-artists roster including, from Japan, Aida Makoto, Kusama Yoyoi, Sawa Hiraki, Sugimoto Hiroshi, Tenmyouya Hisashi, and Yamaguchi Akira. As well, Roppongi’s famed alternative space SuperDeluxe will set up shop temporarily in Sydney where is will function – as it does in Tokyo – as performance venue, art gallery, bar and club.
