OVERVIEW
The former residence of Prince Asaka: This building, completed in 1933, has served as the main building of the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum since its opening in 1983, welcoming a great many visitors over the years.
To commemorate the museum’s fortieth anniversary, we are holding an exhibition that analyzes and interprets anew the former residence of Prince Asaka. The architectural techniques, the people who were engaged in its construction, the interior designs and materials, anecdotes about the residence—we invite you to collect the keywords, from A to Z, scattered over the former residence and, through those many discoveries, deepen your understanding of its historical and art historical significance.
We are daring to present the former Prince Asaka residence in its original state, as much as possible. Whether you’ve visited our museum before or not, we hope you will enjoy this opportunity to become better acquainted with it.

Contemporary Artists Interpret the Former Residence of Prince Asaka
We invited two guest artists, Itō Kōshō (b. 1932) and Suda Yoshihiro (b. 1969), to present installations in our Main Building and garden that would provide insights towards a deeper interpretation of the Former Residence of Prince Asaka. In the moment when the work of art, the space, and the history harmoniously converge, new perspectives and new ways of seeing the former residence may unexpectedly appear.
