Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art marks the third anniversary of its reopening this year. Under the annual theme The Time of the Museum, this year’s collection exhibitions introduce works from the collection alongside the activities of the museum across three chapters. The second chapter, A Bundle of Time, explores the diverse ways in which time is experienced, represented, and accumulated through works in the collection and the museum’s activities.
Chapter 1: Time Machines [June 27–September 23, 2026]
Chapter 2: Bundles of Time [October 10, 2026–January 24, 2027]
Chapter 3: Time Flows Here [February 27–June 13, 2027]
Even a single artwork can contain many layers of time: connections between different periods that emerge when artists refer and respond to earlier works and forms of expression; the time through which a work passes from person to person and place to place, preserved, restored, and passed on; and the time accumulated through the museum’s own activities, including exhibitions and collecting.
In this exhibition, we consider the ways these different times overlap and come together within artworks and the collection as “bundles of time.” We focus on the time that artworks have carried with them, and on the new relationships that emerge as these times come together here and now. As you move through the exhibition, we hope you will enjoy traveling through the many layers of time.
