Senzaki Chieo (b. 1953) is an artist from Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, who took the first significant step in his career in 1979 while studying at Tokyo University of the Arts. Throughout the 1980s, he pursued the theme of the natural and the artificial, at times creating large-scale installations that incorporated both interior and exterior architectural spaces. Around 1990, while living in Germany, his approach shifted, and he began exploring the same theme from a wider range of perspectives through series of discrete works or installations assembled from these works. This exhibition brings together approximately 100 works made since 1990, including his most recent.
Rather than separating the natural and the artificial and treating them as opposites, Senzaki sees them as a continuum and seeks to discern how human beings exist along this continuum. His gaze was gradually shaped by his awareness of the devastation wrought by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and by seeing the scars it left on the city. This was a reality of inexpressible gravity, brought about by human intervention that released the immense energy latent within all matter. The exhibition title, Toward the Depths of the Gaze, conveys the artist’s determination not merely to look at the surfaces of things, but to direct his gaze within them, and deeper still, to perceive the invisible universality they conceal. Amid the chaos of present-day society, where superficial differences in values readily cause polarization and antagonism is intensifying everywhere, Senzaki’s gaze will surely point the way beyond these divisions.
