In conjunction with the exhibition The 12th Hiroshima Art Prize: Mel Chin, a screening of Mel Chin’s hand-drawn animated film 9-11/9-11 and a presentation of 9-11/9-11 graphic novella will be held.
The hand-drawn animated film 9-11/9-11 interweaves two historical tragedies that occurred on the same date: the September 11 attacks in the United States in 2001 and the military coup in Chile in 1973. Written and directed by Chin, the work is a fictional narrative created in collaboration with artists, voice actors, and musicians from both countries. It explores how state violence is inscribed in individual lives and memories, and juxtaposes U.S. intervention abroad with the attacks on its own soil, revealing the complex causality surrounding terrorism and war. On September 11, 2007, the film was screened simultaneously in New York and Santiago via a live video link, creating a space for dialogue that transcended geographical and historical distance.
9-11/9-11 graphic novella is the prototype for the film. It is a short graphic work based on a series of drawings completed in 96 hours in the year following the collapse of the World Trade Center in 2001, and was published under the pseudonym Ignacio Morales. Seeking to counterbalance the rise of nationalism that fueled support for war, the artist felt it was essential for younger generations to learn what the United States had done on “another September 11.” On September 11, 2002, 1,000 copies were distributed free of charge on the streets of New York.
