Adrian Berg: The Infinite Garden

The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to present “Adrian Berg: The Infinite Garden,” the first solo exhibition in Japan showcasing the works of Adrian Berg (1929-2011). Berg consistently pursued landscape painting throughout his career and is particularly known for his repeated depictions of Regent’s Park in London, where he maintained his studio for around 20 years from the 1960s. His unique style of weaving multiple spatial expressions and different timelines into a single canvas later evolved further as his subjects expanded to include gardens across Britain and landscapes encountered on his travels.
The title of this exhibition, “Infinite Garden,” expresses both Berg’s continued painterly exploration of the theme of gardens and the very essence of nature depicted therein—a nature that transforms ceaselessly with the weather, the position of the sun, and the changing seasons. This exhibition is the first in Japan to survey Berg’s artistic career spanning approximately 50 years, featuring works from his early period to his later years alongside a wealth of related materials.
