Excitation of the Spirit (Part 2) on view from August 5

From Hara Museum ARC, Gunma

The second part of the exhibition Excitation of the Spirit is now on view at the Kankai Pavilion. The words “compete,” “fight” and “struggle” describe the spirit behind this exciting exhibition which Juxtaposes traditional East Asian artwork from the Hara Rokuro Collection with works of contemporary art.

“Sumo match” (detail), Edo period
We see a fierce outdoor sumo match underway with the audience sitting just beyond the ring. Through their theatrical expressions we can feel their breath and passion. The carefully depicted hair styles down to the individual strands on their head and eyebrows, the patterns of their kimonos, and a wealth of other details give life to the fashion of the early Edo period.

Gan’ku“Tiger”, Edo period
Gan’ku (1749?-1838) was known for his skill in painting tigers, his style is characterized by the trembling quality of his brushstrokes. During his time, there was no opportunity in Japan to see a live tiger. It is said that Gan’ku ordered the stuffed head, hands and feet of a tiger from which he carefully observed the lie of the fur and successfully depicted the tiger with a vigor never seen before. The hair in this work is not shown in such great detail. Instead, the strength and grandeur of the tiger are expressed in the tiger’s facial expression and the rough brushstrokes in the standing hair.
