The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

Director: Werner Herzog
Cinematography: Jörg Schmidt-Reitwein
Cast: Walter Steiner

These films examine the relationship between human beings and nature based on two types of outdoor sports.

Located in the U.S. state of Wyoming, Devil’s Tower is a huge rock formation with a towering height of 386 meters. A French woman dared to climb this extremely perilous peak, beloved by free climbers everywhere, without such much as a lifeline. What goes through people’s minds when they encounter absolute nature? This documentary focuses on Catherine Destivelle, considered to be one of the world’s top climbers, as she sets out on this solitary challenge.

Walter Steiner, a legendary Swiss ski jumper, is the subject of the second film. In Steiner’s intimate interviews with the film’s director Werner Herzog, conducted as he trained to become a world champion and win an Olympic Gold Medal, the athlete discusses his extraordinary passion for woodcarving, life dreams, and the profound loneliness that goes along with being a genius.
