The passing seasons, constantly changing scenery, the death and rebirth of flora and fauna. Flowers burst into bloom, a chrysallis morphs into a butterfly, clouds gradually darken a sunbathed valley.
This work by Georges Rouquier is a fictional documentary in which a cast of real farmers enact a year in the life of a farm family and their neighbors in the village of Farrebique in southern France. Tied to the flow of time and the changing weather, the family’s daily life is depicted through simple yet beautiful images and lyrical music, without depending on dialogue.
At the first Cannes International Film Festival held in 1946, Farrebique won the FIPRESCI Prize, an award created specifically for this movie, and it went on to win many other awards at the Venice International Film Festival and the International Rome Film Festival. Along with Biquefarre, produced in 1983, this film continues to win the passionate support of many fans, including Steven Spielberg.
