Sokurov’s Russian Ark is an unprecedented tour de force in the film history that depicts 300 years of modern Russian history in a single 90-minute shot. The Marquis de Custine, the French diplomat and a real historical figure, along with Sokurov’s voice, leads the audience through the rooms of the Hermitage Museum that have born witness to so many historical events – Catherine the Great attending a theatrical performance, Tsar Nicholas I receiving the Persian ambassador, Tsar Nicholas II and his family at dinner before meeting their tragic end. This fantastic film, which is a palimpsest of epochs from Tsarist Russia to the eve of the Communist Revolution, will hold its viewer literally breathless during this 90 minutes feat.
