〈 report 〉 Charlotte Perriand and Japan

Charlotte Perriand (1903 through 99) of French architect, the designer who left superior achievements by building room design with great master of the modernism architecture, Le-Corbusier in the 20th century. In Hiroshima-shi Museum of Contemporary Art, a large-scale exhibition looking back on achievements throughout the life of ペリアン holds “Charlotte Perriand and Japan” until March 11.

After an encounter with Le-Corbusier and the first visit to Japan of 1940, I focus on relations with Japan which came without several degrees and report a drawing about furniture and the interior, a photograph document, this exhibition introducing approximately 500 points to including the furniture with display scenery.

I enter the exhibition room and Chapter 1 “is encounter 1929-1940 with Japan” and introduces process before atelier entrance of Le-Corbusier reaching Junzo Sakakura, the encounter with the Kunio Maekawa and others Japanese architect and the visit to Japan immediately.

In Chapter 2 “Japan discovery 1940-1946 ,” I introduce popular name “選擇傳統創造” 展 (1941) which went as the state of the first visit to Japan of 1940, the result.
ペリアン which learned mind of the people art has a strong interest by material such as straw and the bamboo from an encounter with inspection of each place, Muneyoshi Yanagi and 河井寬次郎. I designed a carpet for Shays long shot using a technique of the straw knitting of Shays long 》 and back expectation made of ,《 bamboo for “選擇傳統創造” 展, and ペリアン suggested material only in Japan and technical application while keeping a function and the design of the previous work.

In Chapter 3 “postwar reencounter 1949-1960 with – Japan ,” I focus on a re-visit to Japan of 1953 and the design of the Japanese office (Tokyo, Osaka) of Air France, activity in war in the latter half Japan including the interior decoration of the former Tokyo Government building by Kenzo Tange and consider ペリアン and resonance with the Japanese culture.

Chapter 4 “is Japanese 1952-1993 in the – living in France” and, based on experience and knowledge in Japan, introduces various activity of ペリアン where I sent Japanese culture to abroad including France.

Chapter 5 “is message 1993-1999 from life and art – ペリアン” and focuses on ペリアン which I am over 90 years old, and presented energizing in the later years and introduces last and UNESCO 《 tea-ceremony room 》 where it was for the thing which she announced at a public place and looks back toward Japan and a French bridge and the achievement of ペリアン where it was.

In the last space, I can really sit down on the chair which ペリアン dealt with.
