The Eighth Gwangju Biennale will be held 3 September – 7 November, based on the theme ‘10,000 Lives’. Under the directorship of Massimiliano Gioni, hailing form Italy, GB8 will bring together works created over more than a one-hundred-year span in a diverse range of media, with a focus on portraiture. Looking at the history of people’s obsession with images, and our need to create substitutes, effigies, and avatars for ourselves and our loved ones in the form of portraits, the exhibition will also examine how images are fabricated, circulated, appropriated and exchanged – and investigate their power. The complete list of artists, programming and venues will be announced in April 2010.
